Gold has traced a well-defined descending channel since late August, with price respecting both the upper resistance line connecting the 24 August high at 4738 and the 3 September peak at 4558, and a parallel support line anchored at the 31 August low of 4445 and the 14 September low at 4293. This channel, now three weeks old, has guided the entire September decline. The most recent session closed at 4326, just 53 dollars above the 20-day low of 4273, and the final bar printed a narrow range with minimal follow-through—a sign of exhaustion rather than conviction.
The technical backdrop is mixed. The 5-day SMA at 4382 sits well below the 20-day SMA at 4443, confirming the short-term downtrend remains intact. RSI14 has dropped to 42, approaching oversold territory but not yet extreme enough to signal an imminent reversal. ATR14 at 102 reflects elevated volatility, typical of a market in transition. Resistance now clusters around 4440, where both the recent swing highs on 9–10 September and the descending channel ceiling converge. Support is clear at 4273, the 20-day low and the lower boundary of the channel.
Given the proximity to support and the lack of a decisive breakdown, the prudent stance is to hold and wait for confirmation. A bullish scenario would require a daily close back above 4360 with expanding volume, targeting a retest of resistance near 4440. Conversely, a clean break and close below 4273 would open the door to further downside, likely toward 4200. For traders considering a counter-trend long, an entry near 4310 with a stop below 4250 offers a defined risk setup, but only if price shows stabilization—such as a bullish engulfing candle or a hammer—at current levels.
The call is invalidated if gold closes below 4250, which would confirm the channel breakdown and suggest the correction has further to run. Until then, patience is warranted as the market decides whether 4273 will hold or yield.
